What is a CNA?

A CNA is a trained health care worker that provides basic patient care in a variety of settings under the direction of nurses.  Some of the duties include:

• Bathing
• Assisting with meals
• Taking vital signs
• Toileting
• Communication with the health team                                                                                  

Who may take this course?

• High School Juniors and Seniors.

What does this course consist of?

Mat-Su Career Tech’s CNA program is one semester long and fulfills two science elective credits.  The first half is primarily in the classroom setting in preparation for the clinical, hands on experience in a health care setting.  The second half of the semester is mostly composed of clinical rotations and skill refinement.

 

 The American Heart Association’s CPR & First Aid for health care providers will be completed prior to the clinical experience. The two high school credit CNA program prepares students for the State of Alaska CNA certification exam. This is a Career and Technical Education course that offers dual enrollment at UAA and six elective credits may be purchased (fees explained at time of application).

 What is the goal of this course?

The course is designed to train entry-level workers in the 22 basic skills needed to assist nurses and to be efficient health care team members in the ever-growing health care field.
